Using “The Classical Model of Argument,” as your guide, write an essay that closely analyzes one of four propositions taken from the two scenes we have been studying, the funeral scene in Julius Caesar and the dispute over the piano in The Piano Lesson. For this essay, you must use the text of either play to make an argument and counterargument in response to one of the four following proposition: 1) leaders of a political community have a right to protect themselves and their people against the threat of tyranny, even through the use of preventive violence if they deem it necessary (Brutus’ point of view in Julius Caesar); 2) there is no such thing as violent prevention of tyranny (a possible conclusion from the result of what happens in Julius Caesar); 3) selling an object that tells a family’s story is like trying to sell the family (Berniece’s point of view in The Piano Lesson); 4) there is no way for children to honor the legacy their families have left them except by making the best use they can of what they are left (Boy Willie’s point of view in The Piano Lesson). You must make detailed reference to the play you are working with; the words and lines of the play are your evidence.
