Now that you are halfway through this course, what does terrorism mean to you now? Prior to taking this course, you likely had an opinion, an idea, and/or you even had a very good understanding with this topic. Provide a 575-700word - Approx. three (3) pages, not including title page, document reflecting on what terrorism means - include how homeland security plays a role in terrorism today and if you would or would not make changes to current policies. Chapters needed 1-8(just to know what we covered) requirements APA or MLA format (include title page) - For this assignment, citations are not needed as this is a reflection on your thoughts. (50 points) 12 font size - times new roman - Paper must be double spaced - With a title page. (50 points) Content is thorough and articulated - the assignment is thought-out with focused examples on chapter notes and lectures (50 points). Failure to meet any requirement, including, word count will and can affect your grade significantly. My first reflection post to have an idea Terrorism and Homeland security, unfortunately, are something that I don't know much about how it is managed or the methods to prevent a terrorist attack. Therefore I think this class will cover how to prevent terrorism, which is what I am interested in. The significant act of terrorism that I know of (I think everyone does) is the 9/11 attack. The September 11 attack was a world notice about the tragedy which had relevant impacts. The one thing I know is this terrorist attack led to the creation of the Department of Homeland Security in 2002 to prevent any intent or act of terrorism and protect the citizens of the United States. I think the creation of this department resulted from the fear people had after 9/11 and to guarantee security. I consider that preventing terrorism is challenging because many acts of terrorism could be performed with weapons of different types. Another type of terrorism I know of is the shooting in high school, which is a frequent sad success. Any act of terrorism may occur due to different factors like religion, psychology, or ideologies. In my country, there are acts of terrorism that have been happening with more prevalence in the last years, when Cartels from Mexico settle in Ecuador. Events of lawlessness that occur with more recurrence are car bombs in places around Guayaquil, where the Cartel of Sinaloa sends people to get more assassins (sicarios). Unfortunately, in my country, there is no department to prevent these types of crimes; therefore, the civilization is in constant danger of suffering at any time of outrage. As a consequence of that, many concerts have been canceled, and Ecuadorians fear for their safety. Nevertheless, taking action to thwart terrorism can backfire. While counterterrorism efforts should not go beyond what is required to maintain peace and security or to undermine the rule of law and democracy in the name of trying to defend it, law enforcement actions targeted against terrorists are essential and appropriate.
