PERSONAL STATEMENT We ask that you submit a 3-4 page, double-spaced personal statement as a part of your application. This statement is considered a writing sample and will be reviewed for content and writing quality. Your statement must be at least 3 full-length pages. Boston University School of Social Work is committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice. Please comment on these principles in the context of your professional experience and aspirations in one cohesive, free-flowing essay. Additionally, please briefly touch upon the following areas (as applicable): Discuss why you believe the Boston University School of Social Work is best suited to meet your graduate education needs. (BU is a school with a long history of creating leaders in communities and global settings which motivate me to seek an education at BU. The quality of an MSW education at BU is comprehensive with a focus in equity, inclusion, and diversity which alignes with providing me the knowledge needed for my future career goals in policy making and administration of social services. How do you believe you will manage the rigorous demands of coursework and field education during graduate study? I have in the past managed my coursework through organization of my coursework, assignments, and readings in a planner which I look every morning. Ilike to break down bigger assignments where i work daily on some part of the assignment in order to not be overwhelmed with completing the whole assignment a week before its due date. I set alarms and timers when I begin my work in order to remind myself to take breaks and to switch from a task. I also like to seek support from the university writing center for assignments when submitting writing assignments. Identify your strengths and areas in need of improvement that are relevant to the social work profession. What inspires you to pursue this profession?(my weaknesses are my communication skills, especially when working within a team, this is an area i need improvement in. A strength of mines are my critical thinking skills, analyzing problems to provide solutions, and emotional intelligence during a crisis. If you have clear career goals, please tell us what type of work you see yourself engaged in after earning the MSW. (My career goals are to work within policy making and administration of social services,i would like to be involved in building policies that can affect those needing access to support and services, especially for children in thechild welfare system) If you have low or inconsistent grades in undergraduate (or graduate) study or have attended multiple schools to earn a degree, please discuss any issues you may have faced to help us better understand your academic background. (I HAVE A LOW under grad GPA, butbegan started my MSW at Widener University in 2018 and currentlyhave 3.6 GPA./ Issues that affected my undergrad GPA was lack of knowing of a mental health issue until i graduated, which affected my learning ability and affected my communication skills with my professors.)
