NUR 4960 CLINICAL ASSIGNMENT # 1 Leadership Style, Communication, Power . 2. Arrange to meet, interview and observe a nurse leader/manager/supervisor over the course of a 2 -3-time period. During this time observe the leader in his/her daily activities with the staff. Note, in particular the leadership style, behaviors and communication patterns of the individual. What type of Power(s) does the leader use when interacting with others that are superior and subordinate to the leader? How does this leader compare to or contrast with the theories in the text? When interviewing the leader please provide background as to how long has this person been in a leadership position and was he/she a staff member on the unit prior to becoming the leader/manager. (do not identify the leader by name or institution.) Ask the questions below. a. Ask the leader to identify his/her the type of leadership/management style they employ? b. Has this style changed over time? If so what was the motivation to change style? c. What is the greatest motivational tool utilized by the leader? d. What Powers did you see the leader employ interacting with the staff (provide examples)? e. Ask the leader to identify three major health care issues and how these impact on their ability to perform their job? 3. After the time spent with the leader prepare a 3-4 page paper of a synopsis of the interview and questions. Describe your observations including do you agree the style the leader has self-identified is the one you observed? How does the staff react to the leader’s style and use of Power?
