Identified the literary element(s) used to develop that theme
For this first essay assignment, you will choose any of the short stories (work with 1 or 2) we will read in class during Weeks 3-5, and write a 3-4 page (750-1000 words) persuasive essay in which you analyze a character, theme, motif, symbol, or any other literary aspect that you find interesting. Be sure to justify the importance of your idea in relation to the text and relevant content. You must discuss the significance of your idea in relation to a theme that is presented in the story(ies) and how it enriches our understanding of the story(ies). As you consider how you are going to approach this assignment or as you think about your thesis for this essay, first identify the major themes of the story(ies). Then begin analyzing or “taking apart” the story to uncover how the author develops his/her theme using particular literary elements. As you write your essay, make sure that you have: Identified the theme/idea you are addressing Identified the literary element(s) used to develop that theme Analyzed specific examples in the story that demonstrate the use of those literary elements (plot, setting, character, etc.) To avoid summary in your essay, focus on two or three key scenes/moments/details and explore those in depth rather than attempting to tackle the story as a whole. Successful essays will include: A creative and original title An introductory paragraph that provides an attention getter, background information, and ENDS with a thesis for literary analysis A clear thesis that includes the author, the title of the work, and your points of analysis (preview) Body paragraphs that begin with transitions and topic sentences and provide ample support from the original text, details that support the thesis, and show the importance of the analysis through explanation and connections to the real world A conclusion that wraps up the essay by summarizing the most important points of the overall literary analysis. Proper use of the MLA style heading example from your syllabus and follow all other MLA guidelines for formatting (12 pt. Times New Roman font, page numbers, double spaced, 1-inch margins, in-text citations, etc.). A Works Cited page in proper MLA format that includes the original text and all sources used for the analysis (some may be from the Annotated Bibliography) The final draft should be submitted to turnitin.com on the due date by 11:59 pm. Remember, all late assignments will receive a 10-point deduction for each day that they are late and absolutely NO essay will be accepted after 2 days beyond the original due date.
