Answer ONE essay question from the section. Responses should be about 3 pages, double-spaced, per essay. With reference to two philosophers (Descartes, Hobbes, Locke, Hume, Kant, Ultiranism ) we have studied this semester, explain the role that scepticism has played in early modern thought. Can scepticism be overcome? How? If not, why not? Briefly state and defend your own position. Descartes provides a version of the ontological argument in “Meditation V.” Hume argues that the ontological argument does not establish God’s existence. Explain Descartes’ version of the argument, and outline Hume’s criticisms in as much detail as you can. Do you think the argument works? If not, why not? Do you think there are better proofs of God’s existence? Explain. Compare and contrast the political philosophies of Hobbes and Locke as thoroughly as you can. Which view rests upon the most accurate conception of human nature? Which view of government is best? Explain your answer in as much detail as you can.
